1. BULK CARRIER
Many of the world's raw materials are transported in bulk carriers. These are single-deck vessels with large hatchways and holds to facilitate the handling of cargo. They vary in size from 17,000 to 70,000 dwt. corresponding to the largest ships that can enter the panama canal.
2. ORE CARRIERS
Ore Carriers are usually strengthened to facilitate the carriage of ores & often have ballast tanks extending for the full length of the hold space along each side. They have no cargo-handling equipment.
3. BARGE CARRIER
A lighter aboard ship (LASH) carries 70-90 rectangular barges of 370 dwt. each, which are loaded over the slern and transferred forward for stowage. The larger SEABEEs carry 38 barges, each of 847 dwt.
4. RoRo CONTAINER SHIP
These ships transport unitised general cargoes on oceanic routes, and on a typical vessel one part is allocated to RoRo cargo while the deck & forward holds provide cellular space for containers.
5. CONTAINER SHIP
The holds of containers ship s are designed to take standard 20ft container. These ships can be loaded in 24 hours, usually at specially constructed berths. Cellular container ships have been in use since the late 1960's.
6. RoRo FERRY
Short-sea ferries are arranged so that cargo may be loaded and discharged rapidly. The cargo is mainly loaded commercial vehicles and private cars.
7. CAR CARRIER
Export vehicles are driven on and off this specialised ship via side ramps and 'hull door' . There is parking space throughout the nine decks.
8. GAS CARRIER
Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is contained in specially constructed insulated tanks at its boiling point (-161°C). LNG carriers are currently the most expensive ships in service. Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carriers are usually smaller than LNG carriers and their tanks can be pressurised.
9. CHEMICAL TANKER
Bulk liquid chemicals are transported in specially designed ships, sub-divided into a number of tanks separated from the vessel's main structure.

10. PRODUCTS TANKER
Products tankers can carry many different grades at the same time, and are much smaller than crude-oil carriers. Cargoes are refined oil products such as fuel, benzine and diesel.
11. VERY LARGE CRUDE OIL CARRIER (VLCC)
Despite their great size VLCC's are essentially simple ships. They are subdivided into a number of tanks by two longitudinal and several transverse bulkheads extending the full depth of the hull. They can usually load or discharge a full cargo in less than 24 hours, whatever their size.
12. COMBINATION CARRIERS
Combination carriers are designed to switch from crude oil to bulk solid cargoes. The oil-bulk-ore (OBO) carrier uses the same holds for all cargoes, and so needs cleaning between voyages, while this is avoided in ore-oil (O-O) carriers which use only the centre of each hold for dry cargo.
